Hello

My name is Melissa Kustra. I am an educator at heart. My passion for teaching and designing learning experiences began with my Bachelor of Education and the time I spent as an elementary educator and figure skating coach. I have a master’s degree in Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies from Florida State University. I am an instructional designer and trainer for FCCI Insurance Group. I am particularly interested in needs analysis, meaningful learner engagement, and storytelling.

Goal Statement

I was an elementary educator for three years before I decided to further my education and pursue instructional design. My favourite parts of being an educator were designing engaging learning and integrating technology to enhance the learning experience and make content come alive. Through instructional design I can apply my knowledge of learning theories and evaluate learning needs while employing my creative and artistic side. Being an instructional designer allows me to be in both fields—education and business—while designing and developing content and learning.

I am currently an instructional designer and trainer at FCCI Insurance, where I develop eLearnings on commercial lines insurance, and support multiple departments across FCCI. I am also an ocean enthusiast and have volunteered with the Coral Conservation Society as an instructional designer, producing instructional videos and materials for their outreach projects and initiatives.

I purposefully chose the Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies (ISLT) master’s program at Florida State University because I wanted to gain a strong foundation in instructional design models and adult learning theory. I feel that I have truly succeeded in gaining a strong foundation in learning and theory from the ISLT program. I strive to be a life-long learner and stay current with best practices and trends in my field.

The first step in my design process is always analysis. It is important to me to first identify the gap between current state and desired state so that the learning I design meets a business need. Going forward, my goal is to ensure the learning environment leads to a change in behavior in the performance environment by ensuring learning is meaningful, engaging and impactful.
